The ruling Bangladesh Awami League is trying to strengthen its organisational capacity by reorganising leaderships of its different units and associate bodies, said sources in the party.

As part of the move, the party high command has directed the leaders concerned to keep intruders and controversial leaders away from different posts of the party and its associate bodies.

Besides, the supreme authority of the ruling party has also decided to evaluate the dedicated, sincere and honest leaders and workers across the country.

The Awami League has been criticized in some cases for the controversial activities of some of its leaders at different levels. The names of the leaders of the ruling party and its various allied organisations have been repeatedly mentioned for various immoral activities, including corruption, irregularities, illegal occupation and showing the influence of power.

In particular, the involvement of the ruling party's youth wing Juba League leaders in the casino business, allegations of extortion against some top leaders of the Bangladesh Chhatra League and some other leaders of Awami League has tarnished the image of the party.

Under the circumstances, party president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina has already taken various initiatives to restore the image of the Awami League by taking immediate punitive measures against those found involved with illicit acts.

Besides, the party has initiated reorganising the party, its different wings and associate bodies through holding of councils. It has already removed many of the intruders and other leaders involved in various immoral activities.

According to the recent activities of the party, it has already completed councils of Jubo League, Swechchhasebok League, Krishok League and Shramik League. Besides, the councils of the party’s two units in capital Dhaka and many district units have also been completed.

By these councils, a large number of controversial leaders have been excluded while many new faces with clean images and charismatic capacities have also been selected as the leaders.

The party sources also said it is hopeful of completing full-fledged committees of 31 organisational districts, which have already held councils, by next December.

At the same time, according to the leaders concerned, councils of rest 48 organisational districts will be started from next January if the Corona situation gets normal. They said they were thinking of holding councils of the upazila and union levels before the district unit councils.

Several AL leaders in-charge of the party's organisational activities said before the completion of the full-fledged committees of different units, they were verifying allegations against different leaders, who want to be the leaders in the new committees. Organisational punitive measures would be taken against those who would be found guilty.

Awami League presidium member Col (Retd) Faruk Khan said, “One thing noteworthy this time is that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself is checking and selecting all the committees. The top leaders of the organisation at first formed a draft committee and submitted it to the party president. Then these are being finalised through verification.”

"The main goal this time was to gift non-controversial leadership. So far it has been possible”, he added.

Same opinion was expressed by Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif, a joint general secretary of the Awami League. He said, “Honest, capable dedicated leaders have been evaluated in committees from the center to the grassroots.”
