The full new central committee of Bangladesh Awami League is likely to be announced tomorrow, said Obaidul Quader, who has been re-elected as the party’s General Secretary.

“The new central committee of Awami League has been partially announced. The Awami League presidium members will meet on Tuesday to decide forming the full new central committee which is expected to be announced on the same day,” said Quader on Sunday at his Secretariat office in the city.

Bangladesh Awami League on Tuesday reelected Sheikh Hasina for the 9th time as the President and Obaidul Quader as the General Secretary for the second time.

They were reelected President and general Secretary for the next three years at the council session of the AL’s 21st National Council held in the city. The AL council on the final day of the two-day council elected 42 office-bearers in the 81-member central working committee, the party’s highest decision-making body.

Three new faces -- Shajahan Khan, Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman-- were inducted into the AL presidium, while no-one of the 14 presidium members of the previous committee was dropped from the party’s highest decision-making body.

Obaidul Quader, also Road Transport and Bridges Minister, said that many posts still remain vacant.

“And those posts remain for those leaders who are dedicated and their names will be announced on Tuesday,” he said.

Replying to a query about seven cabinet members who have been excluded from the new committee, Obaidul Quader said that as some new faces have been included in the new committee changes were brought in this regard.

“Some changes took place in the new committee in order to strengthen the party. A shuffle and a reshuffle have been taken to bring the dynamism inside the party politics. It was a very tough decision to exclude those who were in the committee in the last three years,” he said.

Replying to a query Obaidul Quader said that all leaders and workers were very active during natural disasters like storm and flood and in organising Awami League’s programme.

“We don’t find any nonperformer in the last committee. It was very difficult to exclude someone from the committee. Some senior posts still remain vacant. Besides, the whole working committee still remains vacant,” Awami League General Secretary said.

“After the announcement of full committee, only then we can evaluate it. The cabinet members, who have been excluded, may be included in the working committee. The leader who is leading the party, has some strategy with 38 years experience,” he said.

“I didn’t think that I would return. And even I didn’t also think if I return, I would have working ability. I travelled throughout the country in the last three months to organize the council meeting. My leader has trusted me. As per councilors’ opinions, my leader assigned me again to work for the party as it’s general secretary,” Obaidul Quader said.

The Awami League General Secretary said that they have held 29 councils in the last few months.

“We have many outdated committees. We will hold councils to those outdated committee before the Mujib Barsha or Mujib Year as per the prime minister’s directive,” Obaidul Quader said.
