Violent clashes erupted between two groups of activists at Gulshan in the city during the election campaigning of AL nominated Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayoral candidate Atiqul Islam Wednesday. Both the groups belonged the ruling to Awami League.

The incident took place at Shaheed Dr Fazle Rabbi Park of Gulshan-1 at 12:15pm when supporters of Jahidur Rahman Dulal, AL’s rebel candidate for the councilor post of Ward 20, arrived at the spot chanting slogans. Md Nasir, incumbent councilor and Awami League nominee for the post, and his supporters were also present at the venue along with Atiqul.

As Dulal’s supporters arrived, a scuffle took place between his supporters and the supporters of Nasir.  Witnesses said, they threw chairs at each other during the clashes. Later, Atiqul and his supporters left the spot in a procession as part of his campaign.

Terming the clash between the two groups of Awami League as an “untoward incident,” Atiqul Islam said it happened due to a misunderstanding among themselves.

“This is not expected at all and it happened following a misunderstanding within ourselves as it was a important program,” the DNCC mayoral candidate said while talking to journalist in front of Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH) in Mohakhali.

Atiqul also said that the senior leaders of the party have been informed about the incident while urging the party men to have patience.
