AL expels UP chairman over relief scam

Ruling Awami League expelled a union parishad (UP) chairman in Habiganj’s Shayestaganj upazila for allegedly embezzling the relief rice meant for the people affected by the nationwide lockdown due to coronavirus outbreak.

The expulsion order of Mokhlesh Mia, who is the chairman of the upazila’s Noorpur UP and a former organizing secretary of Habiganj Sadar AL unit, was carried out in letter issued by the upazila AL unit on Saturday,  

It said that the UP chairman was suspended temporarily on allegation of irregularities and corruption in distributing relief recently allocated by the government for the ongoing crisis.

A showcase notice was served asking him to reply within seven days from, explaining why he should not be removed permanently from the party, it added. According to local sources, a mobile court raided at the Noorpur UP office on Friday. As the court found nearly 300 kilograms of relief rice missing, it seized rest of 1700 kg rice  

Allegation of irregularities in Vulnerable Group Feeding progamme also found against the chairman as he didn’t maintain any catalogue for rice distribution since January this year.

A case was filed against Mokhles with Shayestaganj Police Station over the scam. Police were trying to arrest the UP chairman, Officer-In-Charge of Shayestaganj Police Station Mozammel Hossain said.
