AL decides vigilance in run up to JS polls

The ruling Awami has decided to keep the streets under its occupation through continuous programmes across the country so that BNP and Jamaat cannot unleash anarchy following the announcement of the schedule for the 12th Jatiya Sangsad (JS) election.

The Election Commission on Wednesday evening announced that the 12th JS polls will be held on January 7, 2024.

Chief Election Commissioner Kazi Habibul Awal made the announcement while addressing the nation on state-run television and radio.

According to the AL, the high-ups of the party have asked all the leaders and activists of the party and its affiliated and associate bodies to remain alert and intensify vigilance until after the JS polls.

Several leaders of the Awami League also said that alongside the Awami League, the 14-party alliance led by the AL, will also continue such types of programmes in the capital and across the country.

They said the high-ups and all the leaders and activists at the grassroots level had been given instructions to remain active with processions and rallies continuously across the country immediately after the announcement of the polls schedule.

The main objective of the decision is to assist the law and order forces to resist violence and keep law and order under control.

Leaders of the AL and its different associate bodies said they have made preparations to intensify vigilance at the ward level alongside holding peace rallies and processions in the capital city Dhaka.

Awami League presidium member Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said, "The election journey has already started just after the polls schedule was announced on Wednesday evening."

"We will also have started our election work in full swing", he said.

Talking about the preparations to check violence by BNP and Jamaat, the AL's presidium member said, " We always remain in the field and always will be like in the past so that BNP-Jamaat and anybody else cannot not get any chances to create anarchy."

"We will hold sit-in programmes and peace rallies alongside processions continuously at different places", he said.

AFM Bahauddin Nashim, a Joint general secretary of Awami League, said, "We will remain alert with intensified vigilance always everywhere. It is our responsibility to keep the country free from anarchy."

"Apart from holding the JS polls peacefully, we will do everything to keep the ongoing development activities continued," he said.

Meanwhile, central leaders of the Awami League held an informal meeting at the party president's political office in Dhanmondi on Tuesday evening. 

Presidium members Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, Advocate Jahangir Kabir Nanak and Abdur Rahman, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Organizing Secretary Mirza Azam, Deputy Secretary Sayem Khan, among others, were present at the meeting.

Earlier, Awami League's Central Executive Council meeting was held at Gonobhaban. 

Addressing the party leaders in the meeting, Awami League President Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said that BNP will try to create more trouble after the election schedule is announced. They will continue these even after the election. 

In this regard, the Prime Minister also asked all the party leaders and activists to remain alert with intensified vigilance.

Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader forwarded the PM's message to all the other leaders of the party.
