We highly applaud Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s instruction to the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) leaders and workers to build themselves as perfect leaders by moving forward with sacrificing mind leaving personal interest and greed. During a discussion marking the National Mourning Day and 47th martyrdom anniversary of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in city on Wednesday, the primer ordered the Chhatra League leaders and activists not to include bad elements in the party to enlarge their own group as they (bad elements) harm the BCL reputation, party’s reputation and country’s reputation.

In the wake of series of campus violence and guestroom torture by the ruling Awami League’s student wing BCL men, her (Sheikh Hasina) statement was very much needed. If BCL men want to make money and wealth unnecessarily, then they cannot attain leadership quality, cannot serve the country and cannot give anything to the people.

The BCL men should refrain from all sorts

of wrongdoing and must follow the

prime minister’s advice in order stay on the

right track

The BCL is an organization which the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman himself established. If BCL does tiny mistake, the media publish big news. Hence, BCL men will have to stay on the right track.

During military dictators Ziaur Rahman and HM Ershad and BNP-Jamaat rule, their student wings-- Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD), Islami Chhatra Shibir and Jatiya Chhatra Samaj had let loose a reign of terror across campuses of Dhaka, Rajshahi, Chittagong and Jahangirnagar universities and all government and non-government colleges in the country between 1975 and 1996 and between 2001 and 2008. Country's higher educational institutions had witnessed the jingle of arms and bombs as both military dictators Ziaur Rahman and HM Ershad and anti-liberation forces Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami leaders handed over arms, sharp weapons and bombs to the students to establish supremacy on campuses.

We have not forgotten the grisly incidents of JCD’s factional clashes and barbaric attacks on BCL men on the campuses of universities and colleges that destroyed academic activities. Besides, Shibir activists continued cutting the tendons of both legs and the left hand of many pro-liberation minded students especially BCL activists across the country. It was a regular happening during that period but media especially national dailies did not see it as they were fully controlled by the then autocratic rulers. But if BCL does tiny mistake, newspapers and private television channels publish big news as they (media) are enjoying full freedom of speech now. Therefore, the BCL men should refrain from all sorts of wrongdoing and must follow the prime minister’s advice in order stay on the right track
