AL candidate withdraws nomination from Rangpur-3 by-poll

Awami League (AL) nominated candidate Advocate Rezaul Karim Razu withdrew his nomination paper on Monday afternoon from the Returning Officer for Rangpur-3 by-election, reports BSS.

Office Secretary of district AL Tauhidur Rahman Tutul told that AL- nominated candidate Advocate Rezaul Karim Razu withdrew his candidature as per decision taken by the party’s high command supporting the Mohajyote (JaPa) candidate. “After withdrawal of nomination paper by the AL-nominated candidate, six candidates are reaming in the fray for Rangpur-3 by-poll,” said Rangpur Regional Election Officer and Returning Officer for by-poll in Rangpur-3 seat GM Sahatab Uddin.

Earlier, twelve aspirant candidates collected nomination papers to vie in the Rangpur-3 by-poll and three of them, including AL leader Abdul Mazid, JaPa leaders SM Fakhr-uz-Zaman Jahangir and SM Yasser did not submit their nominations papers. Later on September 11 last, nomination papers submitted by independent candidate and BNP leader Kawser Zaman Babla and Ekramul Haque of Bangladesh Congress were cancelled during the scrutiny.

Nomination papers of seven others were declared valid on that day after scrutiny by the Returning Officer for by-poll in Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency. ‘Election symbol will be allocated among the six contesting candidates in the Rangpur-3 by-poll today at 11 am,” the Returning Officer said.

The six contesting candidates are: Jatiya Party (JaPa) nominated Mohajoyte candidate Rahgir Al Mahi Saad Ershad, BNP-nominated candidate RitaRahman, independent candidate Hossain Mokbul Shahriar Asif, National PeopleParty leader Shafiul Alam, Muhammad Shahidullah of Gano Front and Tauhidur Rahman Mandal Raju of Khelafat Majlish.

Earlier, the Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency fell vacant following the death of Leader of the Opposition and Jatiya Party (JaPa) Chairman Hussein Muhammad Ershad on July 14 last. On Sept 1, the Election Commission announced the schedule for the Rangpur by-poll. As per the announced schedule, the deadline for submission of nomination papers was September 9, while the date for scrutinizing those was September 11 and the last date for withdrawal of candidature was September 16.

Voting of the by-election will be held on October 5 next using the Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) at all 910 booths of 130 polling centres across the constituency.
