Aftermath of the sudden death of Advocate Abdul Matin Khasru, former MP and Law Minister on April-18 this year, the Election Commission has declared the seat of Cumilla-5 constituency vacant.

With the declaration of the EC, more than 50 local ruling party leaders and activists had purchased nomination papers for contesting the by-election in the vacant seat of Cumilla-5 constituency and were desperately lobbying to get support from Awami League with the symbol 'Boat'.

Among the nomination seekers from AL, there were: Joint Secretary of Cumilla district south AL Sajjad Hossain, former President of Cumilla Advocate Bar Advocate Hasem Khan, Principal Selim Reza Sourav, former student leader Mahtab Hossain, Advocate Abdul Momin Ferdous, Member of district south AL Abdus Salam Beg, Selina Wasif, former Upazila Chairman Jahangir Khan Chowdhury, Principal Mohammad Ali and Major General (retd.) Mustafizur Rahman.

However, it is learnt, Advocate Hasem Khan has got the party nomination for contesting the by-poll of Cumilla-5 constituency.

One of the nomination seekers from AL Sajjad Hossain Swapon informed he is involved with the politics of AL and never betrayed the party, even during its bad days. He added, he would continue his support for Adv Hasem Khan as per the party decision.

Meanwhile, after winning the party nomination Adv Hasem Khan said,' I have been following the policies and the ideals of Bangabandhu. The daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Hasina has evaluated me by nominating me for contesting the by poll from the party ticket.'

It is learnt, the by-elections of Cumilla-5 constituency is supposed to be held on July-28. According to the party decision, all the purchasers of nomination papers to contest the poll from AL have withdrawn their nomination papers. As a result, Adv. Hasem Khan is the only candidate from the ruling AL in the constituency and he is likely to be elected MP without contest unless there is contestants from other parties.
