AL, BNP desperate to win Gazipur seats

Centring the upcoming 12th National Parliament elections, all the candidates in five constituencies of Gazipur district have become active in getting nominations and securing victory as well.

Names of more than one candidates from both Awami League and BNP for each of the five seats are being discussed.

Names of many candidates from several other parties are also on discussion.

However, highest number of proposed names from the ruling Awami League are being discussed in the areas.

It should be mentioned that in the last 11th parliamentary elections, the ruling Awami League candidates won all the five seats in the district. 

According to different local leaders and parties, each of those five Awami League lawmakers are said to be the candidates again in the next 12th Parliamentary elections.

On the other hand, BNP is desperate to win these seats in the next poll while Jatiya Party, the main opposition in the parliament, is also trying to do better in these seats.

Gazipur-1: Several names are being discussed as the candidates in this constituency from both the ruling party and from the oposition BNP. 

According to sources in Awami League, present Awami League lawmaker AKM MozammelHaque, who is also the Minister for Liberation War Affairs, is going to be a candidate again from this seat. 

Earlier in 2008, he had stepped down from the Mayor post of the then Gazipur municipality and was elected as a member of parliament (MP) from this seat. Later, he was elected the MP in 2014 and 2018 elections also. Being the Gazipur district Awami League president, AKM MozammelHaque is a strong candidate of the Awami League for this seat.

Awami League sources also said that Kaliakair Upazila Awami League general secretary and former Kaliakair upazila chairman Rezaul Karim Russell also wants party nomination of Awami League for this seat. 

On the other hand, names of several candidates are being discussed from the BNP to contest for this seat. 

Of them, former member of BNP Standing Committee, Chowdhury Tanveer Ahmed Siddiqui, also a former State Minister for Commerce, is a possible candidate from BNP in the seat. Otherwise, his son Barrister Chowdhury Ishraq Ahmed Siddiqui may also be a candidate in this seat. 

Former general secretary of Gazipur district unit BNP, KaziChayedulAlam Babul, BNP's central executive committee member Mojibur Rahman is also a possible candidate from the BNP in this election. Besides, Jatiya Party's central executive member Shariful Islam may be the candidate for this seat.

Gazipur-2: State Minister for Youth and Sports, Zahid Ahsan Russel is a potential candidate from Awami League for this seat. He earlier was elected as the MP from this seat as Awami League candidate in 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2018. 

Advocate Azmat Ulla Khan, President of Gazipur Metropolitan Awami League, is another possible candidate seeking nomination for this seat from Awami League this time. 

On the other hand, former president of Gazipur Metropolitan unit BNP, Hasan Uddin Sarkar is a potential candidate from the party for this seat. Besides, a former convener of Gazipur city unit BNP, Salahuddin Sarkar may also seek party nomination. 

Moreover, Jatiya Party's Gazipur Metropolitan Unit President MM Niaz Uddin is a possible candidate for this seat. Party’s central organising secretary Zainal Abedin and Central Executive Member MahbubulAlamMamun are also trying to get party nomination for this seat.

Gazipur-3: Present lawmaker and district unit Awami League's general secretary Muhammad Iqbal Hossain Sabuj may seek party nomination for this seat again. He was elected MP from this seat in AL ticket in 2018 elections. 

Rumana Ali Tusi, Women Affairs secretary of Krishok League, is also trying to get AL nomination for this seat.  She is currently a Member of Parliament for the reserved women's seat (number 314) in the National Parliament. She is a daughter of former state minister advocate. Rahmat Ali. The name of Rahmat Ali's son, Jamil Hasan Durjoy, who is a former joint secretary of the district unit Awami League, is also heard as a possible candidate.

On the other hand, BNP's central assistant health secretary Dr. Rafiqul Islam Bachchu is a potential candidate from the BNP. Besides, the name of Sreepur Upazila unit BNP president Shahjahan Fakir is also on the discussion as a candidate.

Names of Jatiya Party's central joint organisational secretary Azaharul Islam Sarkar and Gazipur District unit committee member secretary Md. Kamruzzaman Mandal are being discussed as the candidates from the Jatiya Party.

Gazipur-4: Awami League presidium member and present lawmaker Simin Hossain Rimi, is a candidate for this seat. Rimi is a daughter of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Tajuddin Ahmad. Simin Hossain Rimi was first elected as the MP in September 2012 by-election. She was also elected as the MP earlier in 2014 and 2018. 

Besides, the name of Alam Ahmed, who is a member of the advisory board of the Central Committee of the Krishok League, is also remain on the discussion as the candidate from the Awami League for this seat. Alam Ahmed is a cousin of Simin Hossain Rimi as he is a nephew of Tajuddin Ahmad.

On the other hand, Gazipur district unit BNP's general secretary and Kapasia upazila BNP convener Shah RiazulHannan is a candidate from the BNP. His father, late Brig Gen ASM Hannan Shah was a lawmaker from this seat in the 1991 elections. Former president of Kapasia Upazila unit BNP Khalilur Rahman may seek party nomination. 

In this seat, Jatiya Party (Ershad) convener of Kapasia Upazila Jatiya Party Samsuddin Khan will seek party nomination.

Gazipur-5: Present lawmaker and party's central women's affairs secretary MeherAfrozChumki is a candidate for this seat. Apart from 2018, she was was also elected as the MP earlier in 2009 and 2014. She is a former State Minister for Women and Child Affairs. Her father Moyezuddin Ahmed was also an AL MP in 1973. In the seat, another heavyweight candidate of Awami League is Akhtaruzzaman, who is a former GS and VP of Dhaka University's Central Student Union (DAKSU). He is also a former MP of Awami League and former chairman of GazipurZillaParishad.

BNP's Gazipur district unit president and former lawmaker AKM FazlulHaqueMilon is a possible candidate of BNP.

The name Arif Khan, a vice chairman of Jatiya Party, is being heard as a possible candidate from Jatiya Party (Ershad) in this seat.
