AL, associate bodies hold peace rallies countrywide

The ruling Awami League and its different affiliated and associate bodies held peace rallies in the capital city and elsewhere in the country to check violence and anarchy in the name of hartal called by BNP and Jamaat on Sunday.

At the peace rallies, the ruling party leaders vowed of resisting any attempt of thwarting the upcoming general election by creating anarchy.

Witnesses said leaders and activists of the ruling party started gathering in front of its central office on Bangabandhu Avenue and other rally places.

The rally held in front of the AL central office was organised by Dhaka South unit Awami League.

Before the rally was held, Awami League leaders and activists brought out a procession that paraded different roads in the area.

Sheikh Bazlur Rahman, president of Dhaka Mahanar North Awami League, said: "BNP-Jamaat created anarchy on the streets on Saturday. We are on alert to ensure that they do not take to the streets today (Sunday).”

Other leaders of the party said they will always remain vigilant in the field so that none could fish in the troubled water.

They said that the AL always wants the peace, but if anybody wants to create trouble, whoever he is would not be spared.

As part of the announcement of the AL, the 14-party alliance led by the ruling Awami will hold a rally in the city today.

The rally will be held at 3:00pm in front of Awami League (AL) central office in the city's Bangabandhu Avenue area with central 14-party alliance Spokesperson Amir Hossain Amu in the chair.

It should be mentioned that at least four people, including a police constable and a bus helper were killed, over a hundred of people, including 17 journalists were injured, over 34 vehicles were torched and many others were damaged by the BNP-Jamaat men in last two days across the country.
