Renowned academic and former professor of Dhaka University Ajoy Roy passed away at Birdem Hospital in the capital on Monday afternoon. He was 84. Ajoy Roy has been suffering from various old age complications for a long time. Ajoy Roy was father of writer and blogger Avijit Roy who was killed by militants at Dhaka University’s TSC area on 26 February 2015.
Born in 1935 in Dinajpur, Ajoy Roy has been a strong voice in all democratic and civic movements including in Liberation War. He taught physics in DU from 1959 to 2000. After Liberation War, he was made general secretary of Bangladesh Asiatic Society. Ajoy Roy was awarded with Ekushey Padak in 2012 for lifelong contribution to physics.
