The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) has approved 16 projects including the construction of an underpass at HazratShahjalal Airport.
The approval was given at the Ecnec meeting held at the NEC conference room in the city's Sher-e Bangla Nagar area on Tuesday with Ecnec Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair.
Briefing reporters after the meeting, Planning Minister MA Mannan said a total of 16 projects worth Tk 24,362.14 crore have been approved during the Ecnec meeting.
Of the 16 approved projects, eight are new and the rest eight are revised projects.
Out of the total estimated cost, Tk 12,873.11 crore will come from from the government fund, Tk 11,472.88 crore from the foreign sources as loan and project assistance while the rest Tk 16.15 crore from the fund of an organisation concerned, said Planning Minister said.
Mannan said, “An underpass will be constructed for easy and safe travel from airport to Hajicamp or railway station. It is expected that road accidents will be reduced as well as traffic congestion on the roads. Through this underpass, the public will be able to travel to metro rail station, BRT station, airport terminal 1, 2, 3.”
Tk 1,183.83 crore will be spent on the implementation of the pedestrian underpass project in the airport area. It will be implemented by 24 Engineer Construction Brigade of Bangladesh Army starting from next July and will be completed by June 2025. A 1,700 meter pedestrian underpass will also be constructed.
The approved projects in Ecnec are - Agricultural Irrigation Scheme through Solar Powered Pumps, Physical Infrastructure Development Project of BCS Academy, Bangladesh Chancery Complex Construction Project in Berlin, Germany, Construction project of Shalla-Jalsukha road section of Sunamganj-Madanpur-Dirai-Shalla-Jalsukha-Ajmiriganj-Habiganj highway and the third Urban Management and Infrastructure Development (Sector) project.
Besides, Urban management and infrastructure development project-4, Signaling and Interlocking System Replacement and Modernization Project of Stations in Ishwardi-Parbatipur Section of Western Region of Bangladesh Railway, Economic Acceleration and Resilience for NIT Projects, Rural Connectivity Improvement Project (RCIP) and Important upazila and union road widening and strengthening project of Chittagong division, Construction project of 1490 meters long PC girder bridge over Teesta river on the road connecting Panchpir Bazar-Chilmari upazila headquarters of Sundarganj upazila of Gaibandha district, Important upazila and union road widening and strengthening project of Rajshahi division, Important rural infrastructure development projects in Noakhali, Feni and Laxmipur districts and Herring Bone Bond (HBB) project for sustainability of rural dirt roads.
