The role that airliners have been playing in the time of pandemic has been substantial. Most companies have been running without making any profit. And with airports closed down in many countries over extended period of time, the airliners have been the one to take big hit from this pandemic.

According to a report published in this daily, country’s flag carrier Biman Bangladesh Airlines and private airlines have been struggling to survive during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The situation has worsened in fear of the second wave of the deadly virus in winter. The country’s passenger traffic has been reduced by 70 percent on international routes and 35 percent on domestic routes during the pandemic. However, it is good to note that the concerned officials are working to bring the situation under control.

Recent numbers show that in 2019, the number of international and domestic passengers in Bangladesh was 1.3077 crore. Out of that 85,96,000 passengers on international routes and 44,72,000 on domestic routes. However, the number is nowhere near to these figures at present. On top of that, the competitive market also takes its toll on the airliners as most of the people in the country travel on foreign airliners.

The overall situation in the country is quite disconcerting for the airliners. Experts say that flight operations depend on the flow of passengers. With the numbers not as high as before, it has become very burdensome for the airliners to operate flights and the result is that only chartered or cargo flights will take off.

Seeing as how the country’s airliners are facing such a situation, it would be prudent for the government to lend a helping hand to them. Now, it is up to the airliners to think of new strategies through which they can survive in these trying times.
