AI-driven hardware is generating buzz in the startup world, though responses have been varied. Noteworthy attempts by Rabbit and Humane have faced mixed reviews, while Limitless and Bee AI, backed by a16z and Exor respectively, are developing their own screenless AI wearables.
Avi Schiffmann, a Harvard dropout known for creating a Webby Award-winning COVID-19 tracking website, is now focusing on a new AI device called Friend. This neck-worn device is designed as a companion to help alleviate loneliness.
Schiffmann has successfully raised $2.5 million at a $50 million valuation, with backing from notable investors including Raymond Tonsing of Caffeinated Capital, Cory Levy of Z Fellows, Aravind Srinivas of Perplexity, Solana founders Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal, Morning Brew CEO Austin Rief, Jordan Singer from Figma, and Google senior product manager Logan Kilpatrick.
The company plans to begin taking preorders for the basic white version of Friend, priced at $99, with shipments expected in January 2025.
Unlike devices aimed at productivity, Friend functions primarily as an emotional companion. The device connects to your phone via Bluetooth and continuously listens, aiming to address loneliness. Users can interact with Friend by tapping a walkie-talkie button to communicate; the device responds through an app and can even send proactive messages, such as good luck wishes before a job interview. Schiffmann views Friend as an "emotional toy," suggesting that the physical presence of the device around the neck enhances the emotional connection compared to using a phone app alone. He notes that the device is not intended as a therapist or for work-related tasks but focuses on providing companionship.
Initially, Schiffmann's goal was to develop a $600 pendant called Tab for tracking people and transcribing meetings, which garnered around $100,000 in preorders. However, he pivoted to Friend, offering Tab preorders the option to switch to Friend or receive a refund.
Schiffmann emphasises that Friend operates with an "always listening" feature but ensures that recordings are not stored and texts can be deleted at any time.
