Despite accommodating all the demands by BUET authority and immediate action by law enforcing agencies, a section of BUET students’ continuing of agitation gives a clear picture that a vested quarter is working behind to make personal gain by keeping the situation unstable.

The conscious and peace loving students, guardians, academics and members of civil society have expressed grave concern over the ongoing protest on BUET campus as they think a vested quarter is trying to destroy the congenial educational environment in the BUET as well as malign image of the government.

Accepting the agitating students’ demands, BUET authority on Friday banned political activities in the campus and suspended 19 students accused of Abrar killing and took visible steps to meet other demands. Law enforcing agencies already detained 18 accused students. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has ordered to take stern action against the perpetrators.

The BUET authority requested the students to withdraw their movement considering the imminent first year admission test and bring congenial atmosphere back on the campus. But defying the request a section of students continuing their agitations.

Soon after the incident Sheikh Hasina directed the BCL top brass to expel the criminals and ordered the police to arrest the perpetrators. Most of the accused in Abrar murder case have already been arrested.

“I won’t consider who belong to BCL nor not. Criminals are criminals and they would be brought to justice and get punishment. I don’t wait for anyone to raise demands. Before the demands were raised I gave directives, the criminals are being arrested,” she said.

But a section of the students staging protest with some demands which BUET authority has already met and working to fulfill the rest of the demands.

They have announced to continue their protest until the internal safety and security is ensured on the university campus. Their other demands are permanent expulsion of those involved in the murder of Abrar after submission of charge sheet, removal of illegal students from residential halls.

Replying a query, Director of Students Welfare of BUET, Mizanur Rahman told Bangladesh Post, “Most of their (students’) demands are already fulfilled and we are working to fulfill the rest of their demands,”

“I don’t know why they are continuing their protest while all demands are met. We will   investigate about vested political involvement with the movement,” He added.

He also said that BUET must not tolerate if anyone try to unstable the congenial atmosphere of the campus.

Abrar Fahad, 21, a second-year student of electrical and electronic engineering, was beaten to death on Monday reportedly by Chhatra League leaders at Buet’s Sher-e-Bangla Hall.
