Afghan returnees will be arrested: DMP chief

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam on Monday said police are alert for the Bangladeshis who went to Afghanistan to fight in favour of Taliban.

He warned that Afghans returnees will be arrested, if they try to enter in the country.

He made these remarks while speaking at a press conference at his office in the capital Dhaka.

The DMP chief said the Bangladeshis, who had joined in Taliban fight, will be arrested and brought under the law, if they try to enter Bangladesh.

He also urged the guardians to immediately inform police, if their children suddenly leave their houses without telling anyone.

The DMP commissioner said the information about how many people from Bangladesh went to Afghanistan or how many are staying there, is available from the intelligence of our own country. Officially Afghanistan government did not inform us how many Bangladeshis went there and how many were detained in Afghanistan. 

Expressing serious concern about the Taliban take over, the DMP commissioner said, the Taliban would declare itself the most powerful in the world as soon as it took power. In this context, enthusiasm will be created among the youths who want join in the so-called Jihad. 

This wave will affect all countries including our subcontinent, he opined.

The situation that is being created in Afghanistan should be reviewed very carefully at all levels of the country, he said, adding, we need to be prepared accordingly.

We have preparations. However, everyone has to work together to deal with the wave that may start. Not only the police alone, but every parents and college and university authorities should cooperate with us, he continued.

He said the origin of militancy in Bangladesh was Afghanistan-centered.
