Grassroots level public representatives at a post rally discussion in Rangpur have urged adolescents and their parents to prevent child marriage for promoting female education to turn girl children into worthy citizens.
They made the call at the discussion followed by a ‘Gano Sangeet’ function arranged to prevent child marriage at Laksmirhat High School ground in Debiduba union of Debiganj upazila in Panchagarh on Saturday, a press release said on Sunday.
With assistance of Palli Karma Sohayok Foundation, RDRS Bangladesh organised the events under its social awareness building programmes of ‘Samriddhi’ project to prevent child marriage for achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs).
Over 1,000 people, including 500 male and female school students, who are members of Adolescents’ Clubs and Youth Forums, members of Elder Citizens’ Committee and guardians, participated in the rally that paraded local streets.
Later, the participants took oath to resist child marriage that shatters life of premature girl children hindering their education and flourishing latent talents and causing maternal and neonatal deaths.
District Council Chairman of Panchagarh Anwar Sadat Samrat attended the occasions as the chief guest with Coordinator (Microfinance) of RDRS Bangladesh Gautam Halder in the chair.
Debiganj Upazila Chairman Abdul Malek Cheeshti, Vice-chairmen Babul Hossain Sarker and Ritu Akhter, Debiduba Union Chairman Abdur Razzaque and Regional Manager of RDRS Bangladesh Rezaul Karim spoke as special guests.
The public representatives called upon adolescents and their guardians to set up an example of not arranging any child marriage to free Debiduba union from the social curse through collective initiatives.
The chief guest appreciated the adolescents for taking oath to free the society from child marriage for promoting female education and reducing maternal and neonatal deaths to achieve SDGs by 2030 in building a developed Bangladesh by 2041.
