The Additional Inspector General of Police Mohammad Shafiqul Islam has been appointed as the new Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said a Home Ministry order on Wednesday. The newly appointed DMP Commissioner expressed his happiness over the decision to give him the responsibility of heading DMP. In an immediate reaction on Wednesday, Shafiqul, also the immediate past CID chief, said, “I shall give my best efforts to turn Dhaka into a safer city for living.”

He said, “I am very happy at the decision of the government. Ensuring total security of the capital Dhaka is a huge challenge.” He said, “I hope that during my tenure as DMP commissioner, I would be able to turn DMP into one of the best police departments of the country.” Although the official order was issued yesterday (Wednesday), Islam would not be taking charge now. The term of the current DMP commissioner, Md Asaduzzaman Miah, ends on September 13.  Earlier on August 11 Bangladesh Post had published a detail report on the possible appointments of the DMP chief. The report had clearly mentioned Islam’s strong possibilities of becoming the new DMP chief.
