Coronavirus pandemic situation has brought many new issues in front of us. One of these is the right to possess food. Most of the Adibashi people earn their living through hard toil. They failed to do any work during the period of lockdown.

Though the Adibashi farm labourers did not suffer from the absence of work, people with other professions remained completely unemployed. Some of them were provided with reliefs from some NGOs while there was little to no assistance from the government.

The extracts are from the comments of some female farm workers of Nabai Bot-tola village under Godagari upazila of Rajshahi at a meeting jointly organised by an organisation named ‘Khani, Bread for the World and the Paribartan’ at Gogram union of the upazila.  Presided over by Costantina Hasda, Member of Gogram Union Parishad, the meeting was addressed, among others, by  Nabai Bot-tola village headman Carlos Marandi, Sister Shiril, school teacher Scolistica Hasda, Gabriel Hasda, Merry Hembrom, Fulmoti Rozario, Chaiti Hembrom, Parimal Soren while Mahmudun Nabi of Sacheton spoke as the chief speaker under the presentation of Journalist Rashed Ibne Obaid.

Speakers at the meeting said, many people went under the poverty margin due to the adverse impact of Coronavirus. Specially, the petty traders and non-government school teachers were hardly hit by the Corona crisis.

Many labourers have been sacked from many garments factories almost no payment at all. The speakers in the meeting demanded to enact Food Security Act in view with the culture and food habit of the Adivasi people.
