Local people including the family members of slain Abu Younus Md. Shahidunnabi Jewel expressed their anger in taking no action against the Upazila Chairman and the UP Members in the incident of killing Jewel by lynching and torching his dead body at Patgram of Lalmonirhat district recently.
They alleged, even the presence of UNO of Patgram, Officer-in-Charge, Upazila Chairman, UP chairman and the UP members, failed the resist the attackers. Rather the instigating statement of the Upazila Chairman made the situation further tense.
UP Member Hafizul Islam beat and drag Jewel out of the mosque by holding his shirt collar to the Union Parishad office. But, no action was taken against them. The family members brought the allegations at a press conference held at the Nabi Villa of Shalbon area of Rangpur on Saturday.
In a written statement one Sajjad Hossain Bappi of the area said,' Jewel was lynched to death on the false allegation of the derogation of the Holy Quran. They not only killed him but also burnt his dead body. Thousands of people participated in the incident of killing where people were seen to express their joy and capturing video of the brutal killing in their mobile phones. Such an incident in a civilised society and the rule of Democracy is unprecedented, unthinkable and deeply worrying.
The speakers in the press conference demanded to free Jewel from the charge of defamation of the Holy Quran and to arrest and punish the killers of Jewel. They also demanded the government to take responsibility of the helpless family members of Jewel and to provide Jesmine Akhter Mukta, wife of Jewel, with a government job.
The speakers further demanded to arrest the killers of Jewel and to transfer the Jewel murder case in Speedy Trial Tribunal.
Among others, the press conference was attended, by the wife, one son and one daughter and local people. It is learnt, on October-29, by spreading the rumour of defamation of the holy Quran, Shahidun Nabi Jewel was lynched and his dead body was burnt.
Jewel was working as a Librarian of Rangpur Cantonment Public School and College.
