Planning Minister MA Mannan said statistics is a beautiful science and statisticians are committed to providing timely, exact and accurate figures following the directives of the prime minister.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion marking the National Mourning Day at the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) auditorium in the capital's Agargaon area on Monday.

M A Mannan said, “I have a keen interest in BBS. Statistics supply all the information required to know and understand the change that is going on in the country at present. We want to make BBS timelier in this period.”

With the government’s help, there will be emphasis on research. Money will not be a problem. The aim is to get the real statistics. Proper development of the country is not possible without accurate statistics.

Highlighting Bangabandhu's contribution to the development of the country, the, minister said that Bangabandhu had proved to be the greatest person ever. He is not a sage, economist, philosopher, guerrilla fighter like Fidel Castro. His achievement is unusual.

“He gathered the common people of Bengal and snatched victory by leading them to resist the enemy's attack unarmed. He got victory for all Bengalis”, he said.

M A Mannan further said that Bangabandhu was very close to the people. Many tried to lead before Bangabandhu but there was one very big difference. He was extraordinary in general. Bangabandhu’s communication with the general public was very natural. That is why the common people of the country consider Bangabandhu as one of their own.

Everyone repeatedly goes back to Bangabandhu’s example for these achievements. He has walked the path of light by liberating everyone from misery.

State Minister for Planning Dr Shamsul Alam was present on the occasion as the special guest under the chairmanship of Secretary of Statistics and Information Management Muhammad Yamin Chowdhury.
