The charge sheet for the murder of BUET student Abrar Fahad will be in a week, a senior police official said. “Police are now scrutinizing the role of those involved in the Abrar murder Fahad. The charge sheet will be filed in the court by the first week of November. CCTV footages will also be submitted as a relevant document,” said Monirul Islam, chief of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).

Monirul made the remark at a mock parliamentary debate organised by cultural body ‘Debate for Democracy’ at Bangladesh Film Development Corporation (BFDC) auditorium on Friday (Nov 1). He said, “Those who are involved in the murder, whatever their political background, are actually miscreants and criminal. Therefore, they have been expelled from the related political party.”

“Any student organizations do not order to kill a general student or any other student who belong to a political organization. Rather the perpetrators are using the political platforms to gain their personal interest. So, politics is not responsible for the killings rather the perpetrators themselves are responsible for the mischief.”

“Later we learned that all were directly involved in the killing. Besides the 19 accused in the case, several others were found involved in the incident during the investigation. So far 21 arrests have been made; many of them have given their confessional statement under sector 164,” he added.

Asked if the police faced any obstacles in investigating the case, the CTTC chief said, “Police were facing difficulties in getting accurate and exact information during the investigation, nothing else.” A second-year EEE student of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Abrar Fahad was tortured to death allegedly by leaders of the ruling Awami League’s student front Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) in Sher-e-Bangla Hall in the early hours of Oct 7.

The BCL activists reportedly bludgeoned Abrar for his Facebook post protesting against a recent deal between Bangladesh and India. His father started a murder case against 19 people — all BUET students — with the Chawkbazar Police Station in Dhaka the same day.
