The case filed over the murder of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was shifted to Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 yesterday, ministry sources said. Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anisul Huq approved a file in this regard on Thursday.
Earlier on January 13, the case was shifted to the Dhaka Metropolitan Session Judges Court from Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court. Abrar, 21, a second-year student of Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, BUET, was beaten to death by Bangladesh Chattra League leaders at Sher-e-Bangla Hall of the university, according to the charge-sheet.
He was found dead on the staircase of the dormitory in the early hours of October 7 after he was taken to room-2011 around 8:00 pm on October 6.
Following the incident, Abrar’s father filed a murder case with Chawkbazar Police Station in the capital. As many as twenty five people were named in the case. Among them, 22 are in jail while three are at large. The three fugitives are Morsheduzzaman Jisan, Muztaba Rafid and Ehtesamul Rabbi Tanim, all the students of BUET.
The murder sparked protests among the BUET students and outcry across the country. Protesting students had long been demanding to case be shifted to the speedy tribunal.
Following the protests, BUET authorities also expelled the suspects and banned student politics on the campus.
Those expelled are — Mehedi Hassan Rasel, Muhtasim Fuad, Anik Sarker, Mehedi Hasan Robein, Ifti Mosharraf Shakal, Moniruzzaman Monir, Meftahul Islam Zion, Mazedur Rahman, Muzahidur Rahman, Khandaker Tabakhkharul Islam Tanvir, Hossain Mohammad Toha, Md Akash Hossain, Md Shamim Billah, ASM Nazmus Sadat, Ehtesamul Rabbi Tanim, Morshed Amartya Islam, Moaz Abu Huraira, Muntasir Al Jemi, Amit Saha, Muztaba Rafid, Ishtiaq Ahmed Munna, Shamsul Arefin, Mizanur Rahman, SM Mahmud, Morshed-uz-Jaman Mondal and Ashiqul Islam.
