On Saturday, the Cultural Subcommittee of the Bangladesh Awami League presented a powerful play titled "Abhishapta August" at the Bangladesh-China Friendship Conference Center (BCFCC). The play, directed by Ashim Kumar Ukil and performed by the Bangladesh Police Drama Troupe, has had 149 performances and continues to touch hearts across the nation.

"Abhishapta August" portrays the tragic assassination of Bangladesh's founding father, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, and his family on August 15, 1975. This horrific event left a permanent scar on the nation's history. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, known for leading Bangladesh to independence, was killed along with most of his family, except for his daughters Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Rehana. Sheikh Hasina later became the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, leading the country toward progress.

The play masterfully combines lighting, sound, music, and acting to convey its emotional story. One of the most poignant scenes is the portrayal of Bangabandhu's youngest son, Sheikh Russel, during the tragic night. The play also effectively uses light and darkness to symbolize the nation's grief.

A memorable moment in the play is Bangabandhu’s descent down the stairs of his house, symbolizing the fall of a great leader. His iconic glasses falling alongside him added a powerful touch, representing the loss felt by the newly-independent nation.

Colonel Jamil Uddin Ahmad, the then Chief of Military Intelligence, is depicted as the mastermind behind the attack. His character adds complexity to the narrative, highlighting the ruthlessness of the act.

Director Jahidur Rahman Jahid and his team received high praise for their portrayal of this national tragedy. The cast, including Tamanna Toma, Mustafizur Rahman, and others, delivered compelling performances.

"Abhishapta August" is a testament to the power of theater to bring history to life, ensuring the memory of this tragic event endures.
