Abducted child rescued from Rohingya camp, woman held

Police have rescued a child, who was abducted two months ago from Maheshkhali in Cox's Bazar, from a Rohingya camp in Ukhia on Cox’s Bazar. A woman has been arrested over the incident.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Md Jahidul Islam of Maheshkhali Circle said that the operation was conducted at the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhia on Wednesday morning.

The abducted child Mojahid Mia, 16, is the son of Abdul Gafur of Gorakghata Sikder Para in Maheshkhali Municipality.

The arrested woman Rozina Akter is the daughter of late Zahir Alam of Shamlapur area of under Baharchara union of Teknaf upazila.

ASP Zahidul said that Mojahid Mia went missing from Gorakghata Sikder Para in Maheshkhali Municipality on January 2. The relatives and the family members could not find him after searching in different places. The father of the missing child filed a general diary with Maheshkhali police station over the incident.

The relatives could not find Mojahid even after looking for him for a long time. At one stage, in the first week of February, an unidentified woman called on his mother's personal cell phone and demanded ransom. 

The ASP further said the father of the child, Abdul Gafur, filed a case as the plaintiff under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act on February 19. After that, the police continued their investigation. Rozina Akhter was arrested from Shamlapur area of Teknaf on the basis of the mobile phone call.

Later, during the interrogation of the woman, the police found out that Mojahid was being held hostage in the Kutupalong Rohingya camp in Ukhia. According to the information given by Rozina, the child was rescued on Wednesday morning after raiding the house of Bashir Ahmed, a resident of WA / D4 block of Rohingya Camp No 2 in Kutupalong, Ukhia.
