Abahani cruise into semis

Abahani Limited cemented their place in the Federation Cup semifinals with a convincing 3-1 victory over Fortis FC on Tuesday. This win marks the Sky Blues' fourth consecutive appearance in the tournament's semis.

Abahani wasted no time asserting their dominance. St. Vincent forward Cornelius Stewart opened the scoring just nine minutes into the match, adding to his impressive tally of four goals in the competition. Brazilian striker Washington Brandão doubled the lead in the first-half injury time, bringing his tournament total to a league-leading five goals.

The second half saw Abahani maintain control. Midfielder Jonathan Fernandes added a third goal in the 78th minute, seemingly putting the game out of reach. Fortis FC managed a late consolation goal through Sajed Hasan Jummon in stoppage time, but it wasn't enough to prevent Abahani's comfortable win.

This victory sets up a mouthwatering semifinal clash against reigning champions Bashundhara Kings on May 14th. Interestingly, this matchup mirrors the 2023 Federation Cup semifinals where Abahani defeated Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra 3-0.

However, their journey ended in the finals with a heartbreaking penalty shootout defeat to Mohammedan Sporting Club.

Abahani will be looking to avenge that loss and claim their first Federation Cup title since 2017. With a potent attack led by Stewart and Brandão, they present a significant threat to Bashundhara Kings' dominance. The upcoming encounter promises to be a thrilling battle between two of Bangladesh's top football clubs.
