A village under threat of Kushiyara river erosion

Over 4000 people of a village are now passing their days in panic as erosion by the Kushiyara River has taken a serious turn due to use of dredging machine for lifting sand.

The village is Angura Mohammedpur village under Kurar Bazar union at Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet. 

The villagers fear that they will get disconnected from the other village as the embankment that links the union to the upazila sadar will go into gorges of the rivers if the authorities concerned don’t take any immediate step in this regard.

Although the authorities concern were informed about the condition but no action has been taken till now, alleged the villagers.

Earlier, villagers formed a human chain and complained to the Deputy Commissioner about sand lifting by dragger into the Kushyara Rivar pointing that lifting sand is the main reason for river erosion.

Md Parul Uddin, villagers of Angura Mohammed Pur said, there is no river dyke in our village. So we have to move through to the people’s house lived near the river in our village. We urge the concern authority to take early step regarding the matter.

Abu Taher, Chairman of Kurar bazar union parishod said, we strongly demand to the concern authority for repair the Kushiyara embankment, which was severely damaged due to the dredging machine.

Beanibazar UNO Kazi Arifur Rahman said, i never get any document about the lease of Angura Mohammed Pur sand. But when asked about the dragger machine use he cannot give any satisfactory answer. He said to speak with the higher authority.

Syed Mejbah Uddin, Ddivisional Commissioner of Sylhet said, no one can use dredger machine destroying the environment.
