A slim hope left for Tigresses

Published : 11 Oct 2024 09:37 PM

Bangladesh women suffered their second successive defeat in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Sharjah yesterday, as they are almost out of the contention to move into the semifinal.

Therfore, the last group match against South Africa today will be a vital for the Tigresses, as if they could win the match, a very slim hope would remain for them to play in the knockout phase.

Meanwhile, Tigresses, could not laugh since their first match when they won against Scotland, as they succumbed to their second straight defeat in three matches and their chances of advancing to the semifinal took a big hit.

It was another batting debacle when six batters could not reach double figures and captain Nigar Sultana Joty struggled alone.

Joty, who was slow but was steady to score 39 off 44 balls, was the highest score for the team and the second highest was 19, scored by opener Dilara Akter.

Actually, the Tigressess faltered with both bat and ball in each of the match against England and West Indies. However, the Tigressess will play their last Group match against South Africa today in Dubai but their chance of winning the match will be a huge challenge when in their previous nine meetings the Protease women won six, Bangladesh won two and one match was abandoned.

But the last T20 sereis between South Africa and Bangladesh may be some inspiration for the Tigress, as they could draw the the three-match series 1-1 when one match was abandoned.

Bangladesh certainly would remember their first match of the three-match series in South Africa when in the first match the Tigresses demonstrated their allround performances to have the dominating victory.

Bangladesh women batted first and threw a challenging of 149 runs for the host and bowlers also were

disciplined enough to restrict the hosts’ counterparts for 136 runs in Benoni.  In that match Bangladesh openers Shamima Sultana and Murshida Khatun laid a solid foundation with scoring 44 runs in their powerplay when the latter was unbeaten with 62 off 59 balls with hitting six fours and a six.

Nigar Sultana Joty, who was also the captain of that team played a rapid 34 runs inning from 21 delivaries. But none of the openers, Shamima Sultana or Murshida Khatun are part of this squad, though Joty is leading the team till now.
