Members of a vested interest group made several attempts to hack the ‘Smart Election Management BD’ app with the intention of obstructing the national election held on Sunday.

The ‘Smart Election Management BD’ app developed by the Election Commission (EC) is aimed at providing latest updates related to the 12th parliamentary elections every two hours.

EC sources said that this vested group wanted to impede the electoral process by hacking this app.

Attempts to hack the EC’s app originated from neighboring India and several other countries.

However, due to strong EC vigilance, these unethical attempts could not be successful. But users experienced a slowdown of the app's performance at the time of hacking attempt during the voting.

The Election Commission developed the ‘Smart Election Management BD’ app at a cost of Tk 21 crore for helping the people with poll updates.

EC Secretary Jahangir Alam at a press briefing said, “The attempts to hack the app were made from India, Germany and Ukraine.”

The EC put in their best efforts to keep the operation of the app normal on the polling day, he added.

The EC secretary also said that the app slowed down due to hacking

attempts and as a result of which users face some problems.

Presiding officers, who were supposed to provide poll information through this app, could not to use it in the first half of the voting.

After failing to use the app, they shared vote counting information through SMS on mobile phones from different polling stations across the capital.

It is worth mentioning that BNP-Jamaat tried to foil the national elections in various ways. BNP-Jamaat activists spread rumours on social media to discoursing people from going to polling stations to cast vote.
