Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will virtually inaugurate Covid-19 vaccination programme in Bangladesh and a nurse will get the first vaccine, Health Secretary Abdul Mannan said.

Besides, 500-600 more people will be inoculated at Covid dedicated hospitals in Dhaka such as Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Kurmitola General Hospital, Mugda General Hospital, Kuwait-Bangladesh Friendship Hospital and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital before the beginning of the nationwide programme on February 8.

The health secretary made those comments while speaking at a function on Saturday in Dhaka.

The government received 2 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine as a gift from India which is making the vaccine in Pune.

Five million more vaccines will come before January 27 under a private sector arrangement between Beximco Pharma and Serum Institute of India.

The government is also expecting to get about 68 million more doses under the Covax mechanism of the World Health Organisation.
