A fascinating personality

Sheikh Hasina is the name of a unique personality filled with humane qualities. Last Tuesday was her birthday. I congratulate her and wish her all the best. Due to an enchanting personality, she draws even the born enemy with absolute compassion. She forgives. She forgets even when someone wished to kill her. Not once, but many times.

It is these enemies who have killed those close to his ideology and blood ties. They killed her parents, brothers and all members of the family. She forgets because her goal is to ensure the welfare of the people, and to establish peace. Father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has always cherished the dream of establishing ‘Sonar Bangla’.

So, forgetting personal sorrows and pains, she looks to change the destiny of the people and that is why she is recognised by the world as one of the most influential, courageous, far-sighted, wise world leaders for her humanity.

World leaders want to hear the story of how she has taken the country on the path of development in the midst of hundreds of obstacles. She has won the SDG's Progress Award at this year's UN General Assembly. Other world leaders, including the UN Secretary-General, praised her.

She has contributed a lot to the tackling of global problems. At a time when economically and power-hungry countries are struggling to cope with crisis, she has dealt with the situation in a populous and middle-income country like Bangladesh with her far-sighted and successful leadership.

When the leaders of various political parties were supposed to cooperate with PM Sheikh Hasina and her government to deal with the situation, they have only misled the people by refraining from cooperating with the government by negative speeches and statements.

When the corona vaccine was brought in and the campaign started, a ‘responsible leader’ said that the vaccine was brought to kill people. This is how the people have been misled. It has been said that thousands of people will die on the streets; the government has miserably failed to deal with corona pandemic. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was not disturbed at all even by this campaign. Possessing a strong personality, Sheikh Hasina remains steadfast in her decision.

She has taken the helm of the nation with a strong hand. It should be highlighted that she is the daughter of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib. However, it is true that most of the media outlets, except for one or two, have played a positive role during the crisis of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

I am personally fortunate to have had the opportunity to work for the eldest daughter of the Father of the Nation for a long time. Every human being has a part of their life that they can be proud of. Part of my pride, part of my ego is when I worked with her. I have seen how a person with a tender heart decides with the required firmness and toughness. During her rule, she did not spare many influential leaders of her own party, members of parliament, committing crimes.

They had to go to jail for the crimes. It is not possible for the country's oldest and largest political team to have all the good people and not have any bad people.

The issue is whether the crime is punished. Yes, no one in the government and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s party committing crimes are spared. In this context, I am quoting veteran journalist Mr. Amanullah, who was among the newsmen covering Bangabandhu during his time. He is alive aged 87. ‘BNP is not the type of party for the Bengalis’.

Now, speaking of the present, there is no need to question how BNP came to be. However, if the Awami League quits today, BNP will not be able to lead instead. That's my belief. I have seen BNP myself.

The Awami League may have some bad people with it, but there are committed Bengalis in the party. Also, there are people committed to dishonesty in BNP and ‘dishonest persons who cannot be patriots' (Mohiuddin Ahmed, Itihaser Jatri, page 43).

Amanullah Bhai was once the MD and Editor-in-Chief of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha.

I will mention another incident. I was then the Press Minister at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington. It was an event of the year 2000. PM Sheikh Hasina went to the UN in September to attend the General Assembly session. From there she went to Bridgeport University in Connecticut. She was to be awarded a doctorate degree by the university. Jawadul Karim Bhai was then the Press Secretary.

Many journalists of Bangladesh including Shahjahan Sardar were present on the occasion. I had earlier delivered the leader's

writings and other books on Bangladesh to Bridge port University.

The secretary of the University Student Parliament attending the meeting was a female student. I don't remember her name. She said in her speech that when she grows up, she will do politics and become a leader like Sheikh Hasina. This is Sheikh Hasina, whose mesmerising personality had influenced that student from so

far away.
