The Election Commission (EC) is ready to announce the schedule for the Pabna-4 (Ishwardi-Atgharia) by-election. If all goes well, the schedule could be announced by the end of August. Before announcement of election schedule, the probable candidates have become eager to get nominations.
Shamsur Rahman Sharif Dilu, MP from the constituency, and district Awami League president and former land minister, died on April 2. Soon after, the seat was declared vacant.
Although there is a constitutional rule to hold elections within three months of the declaration of vacancy, the time has been extended for another three months due to corona. The EC has said that the polls will be held at the end of September instead of June 30 and the date of the polls will be announced at the end of August.
More than a dozen probable candidates of the Awami League have become eager to get nominations in this seat. They are now communicating with the leaders in Dhaka. Their focus is now on the party's central office. The name of the candidate for this by-election will be announced from there.
Apart from his third son Ghalibur Rahman Sharif, a member of Ishwardi Upazila Awami League from the family of late Land Minister Shamsur Rahman Sharif, the candidates for the seat include Pabna District Awami League Vice President and Ishwardi Upazila Chairman Muktijoddha Nuruzzaman Biswas, District Awami League Advisory Member Punjab Ali Biswas, Rajshahi University BCL Former President and Dhaka Supreme Court lawyer Rabiul Alam Budu, Former Liberation War Secretary Rafiqul Islam Liton, Awami League Pabna District Committee Joint General Secretary Bashir Ahmed Bakul, Deputy Office Secretary Barrister Syed Ali Jiru, Women's Affairs Secretary Mahjebin Shirin Pia, Ishwardi Municipal Awami League Education Secretary Mizanur Rahman Swapan, Bangabandhu Central Committee Council Executive Member Jalal Uddin Tuhin, Member of the Central Sub-Committee of the Awami League Engineer Abdul Alim, Retired Major General Nazrul Islam Robi and former BCL leader Dr Muslima Jahan etc.
It is learned that the probable candidates have also campaigned for the Eleventh Parliamentary Election.
