An embankment along the Atrai River in Manda upazila of Naogaon has collapsed following an increase in its water level, rendering 900 families in a number of villages stranded.

Besides, 1,000 bighas of Aush and Aman cropland were inundated.

The Atrai River was flowing 100cm above the danger level due to incessant rains for the last several days.

The local administration has started dumping sand bangs along the banks of the river to protect the embankment.

Around 1,500 families are affected as Nurullabad, Parnurullabad, Prasadpur, Baibulla and Bishnapur unions have been flooded due to the collapse of the embankment at four points.

According to the local office of the Bangladesh Water Development Board, the river started to swell up on Sunday and was flowing 100cm above the danger mark till Tuesday afternoon.

The river water will continue to increase on Wednesday, it said.

Jahangir Alam, a member of the Nurullabad union council, said 1,000 families in seven villages under the union are trapped in floodwater.

Faruk from Nandaibari village said, “My house went knee deep before dawn. Went to the pond saw that all the fish had been washed away. My loss worth lakhs of taka.”

Manda Upazila Nirbahi Officer Laila Anjuman Banu said authorities have visited the flood-affected areas, and the dumping of sandbags is going on in full swing.
