Rajshahi BCL leader murder

9 get death, 22 life

Nine accused persons were awarded the death sentence, and 22 sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment in the sensational BCL leader Shahen Shah murder case of Rajshahi. 

Rajshahi Metropolitan and Sessions Judge OHM Elias Hossain pronounced the judgement in a crowded court at 12-30 pm on Thursday. 

Shahen Shah was former General Secretary of Rajshahi Court College and an intern legal practitioner. He was son of late Moazzem Hossain of Guripara area of Rajshahi city. His elder brother Rajab Ali is incumbent Commissioner of ward-1 and Panel Mayor-2 of Rajshahi City Corporation. 

Rajshahi Court sources informed, there were 31 accused in Shahen Shah murder case. All the accused have been punished. Death sentenced convicts have also been awarded Tk 100,000 fine each while the life imprisoned convicts have been fined  Tk 50,000 each.

The main accused of the case is BNP backed former RCC Councillor Monsur Rahman. He has also been awarded the death sentence. Other eight death sentenced convicts are: Hasanuzzaman Himel(38), Toufiqul Islam Chand (45), Md. Mohsin(50), Rajab (32), Sairul (26), Biplob (35), Momin (30) and Ariful (26) of Guripara area. Of these convicts Momin and Ariful are absconding.  

The life sentenced convicts have been identified as  Lal Mohammad Lalu(38) of Bulanpur Zianagar, Mahabul Hossain(43), Satter(45), Sajjad Hossain(38), Bakhtiar Alam Rana alias Ranglal(35), Hasan Ali(32), Masud (35), Russel(32), Raja(32), Mortuza(30), Sumon(30), Asadul (22), Akhtaru(25), Zaidur Rahman(48), Farman Ali(40), Joynal Abedin (25), Raju Ahmed(28), Akbar Ali(45), Samrat Hossain(19), Tia Alam(30), Azad Hossain(35) and Masum(26). Of these convicts Azad and Masud are absconding. 

According to sources Shahen Shah was lynched and assaulted fatally by the convicts at Guripara Sakin Club premises on August-28, 2013. Later injured Shahen Shah was admitted to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the attending doctors declared him dead.

Nahid Akter Nahan, elder brother of the victim filed a murder case with Rajpara police station on August-29 in this connection where he mentioned names of 25 accused and 25-30 unidentified accused. After investigation, a charge sheet at the court was submitted against 31 accused. 

State Prosecutor of the case Mosabbirul Islam informed, on November 11 last year the arguments of both sides were completed and the court fixed the date of verdict of the case on Deember-10 last year. Later, the date of pronouncement of the judgement was delayed several times and after one year, the judgement was pronounced. There were 24 witnesses of the case of whom 18 were cross examined.
