After the 50 years of independence, women workers have not been able to come out of wage inequality. Around 80 percent of women in Katiadi are being ill paid specially compared to the male workers.

Locals of Katiadi said that the wage inequality of marginal women workers in this upazila has not been eliminated yet.  Eighty percent of women workers in the workplace are victims of wage inequality.

Women workers are doing a lot of hard work including cutting soil, breaking bricks, doing agricultural work and helping to build infrastructure.  The concerned people claim that even though these women are given equal amount of labour, they are being discriminated in terms of wages.

Rekha Akhter (38) has been working in a brick kiln for a long time.  She is a resident of Chariakona in Katiadi municipality.  She joined the brick kiln as a female labourer for her family's livelihood.

She gets only 200 to 250 taka by working around 10 to 11 hours daily.  That is how their family survives.  But another male working with Rekha, gets 7-8 hundred taka daily with 8 hours of labour.

At the end of the day, women workers like Rekha Akter are getting half of the wages in many cases.

Women workers said that they also give the same amount of labour that a man gives every day in the workplace. In some cases, women workers work harder than men.  But women workers get half of the wages of men.  Moreover, sometimes women workers are victims of mental harassment as well as physical harassment.
