8 killed in Sylhet bus collision

At least eight people were killed and 20 others were critically injured in a head-on collision between two passenger buses in Rashidpur area on the Dhaka-Sylhet highway of Dakshin Surma in Sylhet on Friday.

Locals said, “ENA Paribahan and London Express collided head-on in the area at 8:00am, leaving eight people dead and 20 others injured critically.”

However, on information, police personnel and members of fire service rushed to the spot and started rescue operation immediately.

Police sources said at least eight people were killed and several others injured in the accident. However, the death toll is feared to rise further.

Seven of the deceased were identified as Al Mahmud Saad Imran Khan, 33, a lecturer at Women's Medical College Hospital in Sylhet, Manzur Ali, 38, driver of ENA Paribahan, Salman Khan, 25, ENA Supervisor, Jahangir Hossain, 24, bus helper from Dharkha village and Rajniakandi West Para of Sarail police station Nurul Amin (50), Sagar Ahmed (29) of Wari area of Dhaka and Shah Kamal (28) of Akhalia area of Sylhet city.

South Surma Police Officer in Charge (OC) Monirul Islam confirmed the matter to the Bangladesh Post. 

Monirul Islam said, “There was a head-on collision between the London Express (Dhaka Metro B 15-316) and ENA Paribahan (Dhaka Metro B 14-6311). The front parts of both the buses have been damaged completely. Many passengers were killed and injured. Meanwhile, the police recovered the bodies from the spot and sent them to the morgue of MAG Osmani Medical College for autopsy. The injured passengers were rushed to the hospital.”

Acting Deputy Director of Sylhet fire service M Kubad Ali Sarkar said, “We have rescued seven bodies and several others injured people from the spot. The injured have already been shifted to MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.”
