8 killed in Bandarban gunfight

At least eight people were killed in a gunfight between two local armed groups on Thursday night in the Khamtangpara area under Rowangchhari upazila in Bandarban district.

Police recovered the bodies from the spot Friday afternoon.

The officer-in-charge (OC) of Rowangchhari police station, Abdul Mannan, said they found the bodies in uniforms. However, their identities could not be known immediately.

Rowangchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Khorshed Alam said that the firing took place between members of the Kuki-Chin National Front (KNF) and the UPDF in Khamtang para of Rowangchhari upazila of the district on Thursday evening, leaving eight people dead.

 The UNO also said that 200 local residents, who left the area in fear of further clash, have taken shelter in Ruma Government High School and 70 people have taken shelter in Ruma Bom Community Centre.

 Superintendent of Police Tariqul Islam said police recovered eight bodies from the spot and sent those to Bandarban Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy.

UNB adds: Eight people were killed in a gunfight between two local armed groups at Rowangchhari upazila in Bandarban district on Thursday night, police said.

Among the deceased, four were identified as Lal Lian Ngak Bom and Lal Tha Jar Bom, Van Lal Duh Bom and San Phither Thang Bom.

Abdul Mannan, officer-in-charge of Rowangchhari Police Station, said eight people were killed in the gunfight between the criminals of Kuki Chin National Front (KNF) and United People's Democratic Front (UPDF) in Khamtang Para area.

On information, police recovered the bodies this morning and sent those to Bandarban Sadar Hospital, he added.

However, it was not possible to immediately identify which group the bodies belonged to.

Meanwhile, in a Facebook post run by the KNF, it claimed that 7 of its members were killed in the shootout.
