8 get life sentence for killing cops in Pabna

On Wednesday, A trial court convicted eight extremists and sentenced them life imprisonment for killing three police personnel in Pabna nine years back.

Judge of Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Anup Kumar pronounced the verdict in presence of six convicted persons, all are active members of the outlawed Purba Banglar Communist Party (Sarbahara). 

The eight convicts are- Zahurul Islam, Hashem alias Khokon alias Bachchu, Joson Mollah alias  Jabed, Nijam Fakir, Rafiq  Uddin, Ayub Ali, Sukur Ali Sarder and Zahangir Alam alias Kana Alam.

Two of them- Zahurul Islam and Hashem remain absconding.

Special Public Prosecutor of Rajshahi Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal Entajul Haue Babu said the judge acquitted eight accused of the case as the allegation against them was not proved.

The court also fined the convicts Taka 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year more behind the bar.

A band of extremists on July 20, 2010 killed Sub-Inspector Kafil Uddin, 50, Nayek Wahed Ali 35, and Constable Shafiqul Islam, 35, through brass fire at Dhalar Char embankment under Bera Upazila in Pabna.

Constable Rashidul Islam had lodged a case with Bera Police Station on the following day.

Charges were brought against sixteen persons out of them four died earlier in separate incidents.
