7th consignment of uranium arrives at RNPP site

The seventh and last consignment of Uranium for the first unit of the Rooppur Nuclear Power plant arrived at Rooppur of Ishwardi amid strict security around 8-30 a.m. Friday. 

Dr Shoukat Akbar, Project Director of RNPP informed, the last consignment of Uranium from Russia arrived at Rooppur on Friday. 

The first consignment of Uranium arrived at the RNPP plant on September-28, four more consignments of the same arrived at the plant site in October and the sixth consignment arrived there on November-3. 

Sources informed, under the strict vigilance of the armed forces, the vehicles carrying the Uranium arrived at the RNPP project site by safely traversing the long route from Dhaka. Movement of all sorts of vehicles through the road remained suspended while carrying the Uranium. 

Earlier on Thursday, the Uranium was carried on a special plane in Dhaka from Russia. 

RNPP Project Director Dr Shoukat Akbar further informed directions of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for the import, transport and preservation of Uranium are being followed properly. 

It is learnt, with the construction of RNPP, Bangladesh has become a member of the International Nuclear Club. During the full capacity of 

operation, a total of 2,400 megawatts of electricity will be produced from two reactors of two units. 

The first unit of the plant is expected to go into operation in the first phase of 2024 while the second unit from the mid-2025.
