Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen on Tuesday said that Bangladesh missions abroad took different programmes to spread the name and works of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman across the world during the upcoming ‘Mujib Barsho’ or Mujib Year. “Our 77 mission have already taken 261 programmes,” he told reporters after a meeting at the International Mother Language Institute after a meeting of sub-committee of the yearlong celebration of the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation from March 17, 2020 to March 17, 2021.
Prime Minster Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the countdown on January 10.The foreign minister said they had invited some international leaders to join the celebration in Bangladesh. “Many of them have already officially confirmed that they will come.” “We have been very selective in inviting guests,” he said, adding that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already accepted the invitation.
Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohammad, Former Indian President Pranab Mukherjee, and Congress Party chief Indira Gandhi also accepted the invitation. He said Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Crown Prince of the United Arab Emirates Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan have informamly agreed to come, the foreign minister said.
“We don’t want to bring all the guests on the same day of March 17. We’ll have yearlong events. So they will come in different events”. He said the aim of the celebration is to spread Bangabandhu across the world. “Our 77 missions have taken 261 programmes. In different countries we’ll work with the universities and open ‘Banagabandhu chair’. So far three chairs have been opened in Germany, Thailand and Warsaw. One center – Bangabandhu center – was opened at the Cambridge University,” he said.
Former Foreign Minister AH Mahmood Ali, Ambassador Mohammad Zamir, Chief coordinator of the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Birth Centenary Celebration National Implementation Committee Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and foreign secretary Masud Bin Momen were present, among others.
