The internal communication system of Rowmari Upazila, located on the eastern bank of the river Brahmaputra, is in a state of disrepair. The people of 6 unions of Rowmari Upazila have been in dire straits due to the floods and heavy rains which have destroyed 72 unpaved roads and created ditches on the roads. The damaged roads have become death traps due to lack of repairs for a long time. At the risk of their lives, people from 6 unions have to come to the Upazila Sadar every day for various government services and cooperation including education, health and agriculture.
It was seen on the spot on Monday that Bandaber 9 roads, 26 km, Char Shaulmari 13 roads 44 km, Dantbhanga 11 roads 30 km, Shaulmari 10 roads 52 km, RoumariSadar 13 roads 28 km, Jadurchar. 16 roads 45 km. 72 unpaved roads in the unions have been damaged. Among the 6 unions of the upazila, it is important and has become completely impassable.
A local, Abu Hanif Master said that 14 km paved road from Khanjanmar Sluice gate of Bandaber Union to Baitkamari, Purbapakhiura to Dantbhanga has collapsed in 13 places, creating potholes and making it impassable. 1 km paved road from Tinteli to Baitkamari has become a death trap. In addition, 6 important roads of Bandaber Union have become impassable.
Atiqur Rahman Sumun of Sabujpara village said, 1 km paved road from Roumari Upazila junction to Thana junction has become impassable. As there was no guide wall on the side of the paved road, heavy rainfall caused massive damage in three places of the road. Movement through 13 more roads of Roumari Sadar Union has become difficult. As a result, communication with the Upazila Sadar has almost been cut off. Lalchan Sikder of Alga village in Chargender said that twelve more roads in the union have been damaged due to floods and heavy rainfall.
Roumari Government CG Zaman High School Headmaster Abu Horayera said that the width of the road has been reduced due to the collapse of the road with bricks, cobbles and mud from the parking lots on both sides of the road due to poor work during the renovation of these roads. Somewhere in the middle of the road, stones and cobblestones have been dug and huge ditches have been created. Roads in this area have been torn apart by the floods. Although various projects including TR, Kabikha, Kabita, LGSP, LGED are given every year, the money is embezzled by working only in name.
UP chairmans of these Union Parishad said that due to the recent floods, roads, bridges and culverts have been destroyed and communication has been almost cut off. As the roads have become nearly impassable, the movement of people and vehicles is being severely disrupted.
Roumari Upazila Project Implementation Officer Azizur Rahman said information on flood-damaged roads has been sent to the district authorities. TR, Kabikha project allocation will be implied for the repair project.
Upazila Executive Engineer Mejbahul Haque said many unpaved roads in 8 unions of the upazila have been damaged due to lack of repairs. If the roads are repaired properly, the communication system will be improved. Proposals have been sent for paving and renovation of many of the mentioned roads.
Roumari Upazila Nirbahi Officer Al Imran said that due to floods and heavy rainfall, various unpaved roads in the upazila have collapsed at various places.
In addition, many unpaved roads have been breached and the movement of vehicles has become difficult. Executive Engineer has been informed to take necessary action.
