Death of IUT students

7 Palli Bidyut officials suspended

Seven officials and employees of Rural Electrification Board were temporarily suspended after three students from the Islamic University of Technology (IUT) in Gazipur were electrocuted to death on Saturday. 

The matter was confirmed by Md Akmal Hossain, General Manager (GM) of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2.

The suspended individuals are Kamlesh Chandra Barman, Deputy General Manager (DGM-Technical) of Mymensingh Palli Bidyut Samity-2, Khondkar Mahmudul Hasan, DGM of Mauna Zonal Office, AGM Md Tanvir Salauddin, Junior Engineer Matiur Rahman, and linemen Parvez Mia, Shakhawat Hossain, and Abul Kashem. The Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board issued the suspensions temporarily.

The incident occurred on Saturday when teachers and students of IUT in Gazipur's Boardbazar area were traveling by bus and microbus to Matir Maya Eco Resort in Sreepur upazila for a picnic. Upon reaching the Udaykhali area of Sreepur, the picnic bus came into contact with an overhead electric wire, causing several passengers to be electrocuted. Six to seven individuals were injured in the incident. They were rescued and taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared three students dead. All the deceased were IUT students.

Following the incident, the Gazipur district administration formed a five-member investigation committee to probe the matter.
