A total of 67 foreign observers will monitor the two city elections, officials of the Election Commission (EC) confirmed. As per their information, representatives of seven countries and the European Union (EU) will observe the city election. Of the total, 27 Americans, 12 British, six Swiss, five Japanese, six Dutch, two Danes, four Norwegians, and five representatives of the EU will monitor the elections.

Earlier on January 20, the US Ambassador to Bangladesh Robert Miller while visiting the EC, discussed the overall issues of the election procedure. During the meeting he said, the United States would observe the local government election of Bangladesh. Those who come as observers are members of the diplomatic corps. During Election Day, they will see the democratic process.

Besides, there will be 1013 local observers and more than thousands of journalists to observe the city polls, EC officials further informed. The Election Commission shifted the Dhaka city corporation polls date to February 1 on January 19. For the first time, the EC is all set to use electronic voting machines (EVMs) in the polls.
