A mobile court in Charghat upazila of Rah on Wednesday morning awarded two persons one-year of imprisonment for catching and slaughtering 600 sparrows. Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Charghat Sohrab Hossain awarded the punishment by setting up the mobile court.
Earlier, acting on a tip-off, two bird hunters were arrested by Charghat thana police from the Patir Beel area of Kakramari in the early morning around 6-00 AM Wednesday and recovered 600 slaughtered sparrows from their possession. The court sent them to jail after awarding the punishment. UNO Sohrab Hossain in this connection informed, acting on a tip-off, a police team from Charghat police station conducted a raid at the Patirbeel area of Kakramari under Charghat upazila and arrested two bird hunters with 600 slaughtered sparrows from their possession. The imprisoned bird hunters were identified as Abu Bakar Siddique(55) and Feroz Hossain (32) of village Madanhat under the Naldanga upazila of Natore district. They admitted to the police that they used to catch those birds by using nets and slaughtered those to sell in various hotels and restaurants.
UNO further informed the arrested bird hunters have been awarded one year of imprisonment under section-26 of the Wildlife ( Preservation and Conservation) Act-2012. They were also fined Tk 1,000 each for the offence. The seized birds were donated to the local Chandpur Kakramari orphanage.
