Hundreds injured in fresh clashes between CU students and Ctg locals

Several hundred people, including students and Pro Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Md. Kamal Hossain of Chittagong University were injured in fresh clashes with the local people of Chattogram on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the CU authorities have suspended all exams following the clashes, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Kamal Uddin confirmed the matter.

Earlier, the clash broke out at gate no. 2 area of the university around 11 pm on Saturday night that left 30 other students injured.Student were staging protests on the campus since Sunday morning in protest against the incident. 

Witnesses said, students and local people locked into fighting at Jobra village, adjacent to Gate No. 2 of the university since the morning that continued till 12 noon.

Vice-Chancellor (Academic) Professor Md. Shamim Uddin Khan, Md. Kamal Uddin, Proctor Tanvir Mohammad Haider Arif and some other teachers sustained injuries when they tried to convince both the sides.Earlier, a female student allegedly was harassed and beaten up by a gatekeeper of a rented house for being late to return on Saturday.  On information, some classmates of the female student rushed to the spot and tried to bring the gatekeeper on the campus by force, the locals attacked they with homemade local weapons. The students came under attack near Bachamiya shop. Later the entire area turn into a battlefield when other students of the university joined the students.

The attackers also vandalized the proctorial body's convoy of the university and the vehicles of the law enforcement agencies. Three platoons of army were deployed to control the situation.CU Medical Duty Doctor Dr. Muhammad Tipu Sultan said that the number of injured will be more than 60. Of them, 12 were shifted to Chittagong Medical College in phases as their condition was serious.

He said, some of the injured sustained head injuries. In addition, many students were admitted to the medical college in injured condition.

Section 144 imposed in Hathazari 

The local administration this afternoon imposed section 144 in Chattogram's Hathazari area following repeated clashes between local residents and students of Chittagong University.

Section 144 will remain in effect from 3:00pm on Sunday until 3:00pm Monday in Hathazari municipality and within a 10km area of the university, Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Kamrul Islam said in a notice.

According to the notice, the decision was taken to ensure public safety and to prevent any untoward incidents.

During this period, all kinds of gatherings, processions, demonstrations, rallies, carrying of weapons, and assemblies of more than five people have been prohibited.

The development came after a fresh clash broke out between CU students and local residents around noon today, as a sequel to tensions stemming from an earlier confrontation. The confrontation broke out between Chittagong University students and local residents around midnight, following the alleged assault of a female student by a security guard near the university's Gate No. 2.

When asked, CU Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof Kamal Uddin said, "Section 144 had been imposed to restore law and order on campus, and the army has already been deployed."
