Violating hilsa fishing restriction

6 traders fined in Noakhali, fish seized

Six businessmen of Hatia and Sadar upazilas of Noakhali have been fined for storing and transporting hilsa fish in defiance of the government ban of hilsa breeding season. Around three maunds of hilsa fishes were seized and later distributed to different orphanages. 

On the first day of the campaign on Friday, these raids were conducted at separate places from morning to noon. Each Upazila Fisheries Office assisted the Executive Magistrates in the campaign.

According to mobile court sources, on Friday afternoon, 35 kg of hilsa fish, previously stocked, are being taken to the place by trawlers through Hatyar Nalchira Ghat. A team of Nalchira Naval Police raided the ghat on the basis of secret information. 

At that time, four people were arrested along with 35 kg of fish while being taken to the trawler. Later, upazila executive officer Md. Salim Hossain fined Tk 5,000 and distributed the confiscated fish to local orphanages.

On the other hand, upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate of Mobile Court Md. Bayezid bin Akhand conducted a raid on Maijdi Paur Bazar and Sonapur Bazar of Sadar Upazila of the district on Friday morning. 

Around two manuds of hilsa fishes were seized from two traders. One businessman was fined Tk 2000 and another trader was fined Tk 1500 for stocking hilsa fish in violation of the government ban.

The executive magistrates said that our campaign will continue until October 28 to implement the government's ban during the hilsa breeding season. Strict action will be taken against the violators.

It should be noted that a 22-day ban has been imposed from midnight on Thursday as per the government’s announcement to support mother hilsa conservation campaign and hilsa breeding season. This ban will continue till October 28.
