At least 589 people were killed and 647 others were injured in 458 road accidents across the country in March this year, according to a report of the Road Safety Foundation (RSF).
Among the deceased, 61 were women and 96 were children, said a press release of the foundation on Monday.
During this time, 19 people were killed in five waterway accidents. At least 17 people died in 11 railway accidents and eight people were injured.
At least 221 people were killed in 76 motorcycle accidents, which is 37.52 percent of the total deaths. A total of 172 pedestrians were killed in road accidents last month, which is 27.50 percent of the total deaths.
Road Safety Foundation prepared the report based on reports published in seven national dailies, five online news portals and electronic media.
The Road Safety Foundation's observation and analysis shows that 167 (36.46 percent) of accidents occurred on national highways, 179 (39.08 percent) on regional roads, 68 (14.84 percent) on rural roads, 39 (8.51 percent) on city roads and 5 (1.09 percent) accidents occurred elsewhere in the country.
Time analysis shows 5.24 percent of the accidents occurred in the early hours, 34.06 percent in the morning, 19 percent in the noon, 18.12 percent in the afternoon, 6.55 percent in the evening and 17.03 percent of the accidents occurred at night.
Dhaka division witnessed the highest number of accidents and deaths with 141 deaths in 117 accidents.
The lowest number of accidents occurred in Sylhet division. At least 35 people were killed in 26 accidents there.
As a single district, Dhaka district saw the highest number of accidents and deaths, with 37 deaths in 33 accidents.
The lowest number of accidents took place in Narayanganj district. There were two accidents with no casualties.
