56 gold bars seized at Shah Amanat Airport

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) on Saturday seized 56 gold bars weighing about six kgs at Shah Amanat International Airport in Chattogram today.

CIID joint director MD Saifur Rahman told journalists that the gold bar was hidden inside an empty seat of a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Dubai that landed at the airport around 8.30am.

 The market value of the seized gold bars weighing about 6.524-kg is around of Taka 4.5crore. Legal action is being taken in this connection but none was arrested so far, the official said.

UNB adds: Customs officials on Saturday seized 56 gold bars weighing 6.5 kg from an aircraft of Biman Bangladesh Airlines at Chattogram Shah Amanat Airport. Taslim Ahmed, manager of Chattogram airport, said a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines ‘BG-148’ landed at the airport from Dubai in the afternoon.

Tipped off, a team of customs officials found the gold bars, wrapped in black scotch tape, from under a seat in an abandoned condition, said joint director of Chattogram Regional Custom Intelligence and Investigation Department Saifur Rahman.

However, no one was arrested in connection with the recovery of the gold bars worth Tk 4.48 crore.

A case has been filed with Patenga Police Station in this regard.
