555 killed, 1031 hurt in road crashes in Feb

At least 555 people were killed and 1,031 were injured in 503 road accidents across the country in February, according to the data compiled by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity (BJKS).

At least 37 people were killed and 64 others were injured in 38 railway accidents while 7 people were killed, four were injured, and one was missing in five waterway accidents, the statement of BJKS said on Wednesday.

Of the victims, 210 died and 129 others were injured in 173 motorbike accidents across the country in February. That is, 37.83 percent of the total deaths were by motorbike accidents.

The report was prepared by monitoring the news of road, rail and waterway accidents published in the national, regional, and online newspapers of the country. A press statement signed by Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity secretary general Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury was issued to this end.

Dhaka division witnessed the highest 115 road accidents with 135 fatalities and 317 injuries while Sylhet division witnessed the lowest 21 road accidents with 22 deaths and 50 injuries.

Of the accidents, 36.77 percent occurred on national highways, 18.48 percent on regional roads and 

39.76 percent on feeder roads. Besides, 2.78 percent of the accidents occurred in Dhaka city, 0.79 percent in Chattogram city and 1.39 percent at level crossings, according to BJKS statement.
