55 public universities will receive Tk 11,690 crore in funding for the 2024–2025 fiscal year. The University Grants Commission (UGC) finalised this allocation on Thursday, reflecting a strategic investment in research capabilities and academic infrastructure.
Leading the pack in budget allocation is Dhaka University, securing a substantial sum of Tk 804 crore. Following closely are Rajshahi University with Tk 479 crore and Chittagong University with Tk 397 crore. Jahangirnagar University, known for its academic excellence, will receive Tk 279 crore to further its educational initiatives.
Across various disciplines, the allocations have been meticulously distributed to cater to the diverse needs of each institution. General universities such as Jagannath University, Khulna University, and Islami University have received allocations ranging from Tk 154 crore to Tk 173 crore, facilitating their academic and administrative functions.
Agricultural universities like Bangladesh Agricultural University, Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University, and Sylhet Agricultural University have been allocated funds to enhance agricultural research and development, crucial for the nation's agrarian economy.
Similarly, science and technology universities such as Shahjalal Science and Technology University and Patuakhali Science and Technology University will receive substantial investments to drive innovation and technological advancement.
Medical universities like Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Sheikh Hasina Medical University have also been allocated budgets to boost healthcare education and research, addressing critical medical needs within the country.
In addition, specialised universities focusing on veterinary sciences, textiles, maritime studies, digital technology, aviation, and open learning have received targeted investments, reflecting the government's commitment to fostering specialised knowledge and skills.
According to the UGC officials, this comprehensive budget allocation underscores a proactive approach towards strengthening the higher education sector, ensuring these institutions can continue to deliver quality education and contribute to the country's socio-economic development in the years ahead.
